Its interface is colorful and runs full-screen. As characters are typed, the voice of a seven-year-old girl (the author's daughter Christina) announces them. Her voice also provides audio help when the mouse cursor is placed over a button. Favorite words can be stored in a list for visual reference. Although the program can't print and only one document can be saved, the little ones will enjoy pressing keys and hearing their names spoken. Reviewed on Sep 29 1999. Animated Beginning Phonics is a fun educational program for kids from preschool to grade 2. With great sounds and animated graphics, it lets the student practice phonics lessons on upper- and lower-case letters, beginning and ending sounds, middle short vowel sounds, and beginning reading words. With all menu choices spoken as well as read, the students choose their own exercises and learn the relationships between phonetic sounds and over 200 3D pictures. As a reward after completing a study section, a parent/teacher-controlled game room with animated puzzles and memory games is offered. Reading Blaster Kindergarten teaches children how to read at kindergarten level. Skills taught include the ability to distinguish between same and different, recognize capital and lowercase letters, put letters in alphabetical order, match a letter to its phonetic sound, match beginning sounds to pictures and words, recognize opposite words, group words into similar categories, match rhyming words and pictures, spell simple three- and four-letter words, and put simple sentences together. Reading Blaster Kindergarten contains nine activities at five different reading levels and introduces 450 vocabulary words. Reading Blaster 1st Grade is another entry in the excellent series of educational games from Knowledge Adventure. It teaches children how to read at a first grade level. It includes skills such as recognizing short and long vowel sounds; identifying nouns, verbs, and adjectives; writing and reading friendly letters; following directions; using punctuation and capitalization; spelling three- to six-letter words; building words from sounds; sequencing words to make sentences; and sequencing sentences to make a story. This demo contains a single, fun game that helps children to recognize beginning and ending sounds. The full version contains 10 games and features 1,500 vocabulary words. The pronunciation and spelling is US-based. Like all Knowledge Adventure games, Reading Blaster 1st Grade makes wonderful use of sound, graphics, and audio. Reviewed on Sep 13 1999.
