IBM 340 Display Problems

We have found a problem with some of the IBM 340 computers.  The graphics adapter is conflicting with another device in the machine.  The following is a fix for this problem.  If anyone has any questions with this repair.  Please call David 803.696.8278 (pager) or Roni 803.576.5896.

If you see any readable words or letters on the Monitors when they are turned on, and then funny lines when Windows starts, your Monitor is OK the problem is with the drivers in Windows.

To check a machine to see if it has been modified:

Click on "Start"
Click on "Settings"
Click on "Control panel"
(you may have to use the slider bar on the right to find the system icon)
Double click on the "System Icon"
On the "System Properties" windows click on the “Device Manager” Tab
Click on "Display Adapters"
Click on the entry line just below the display adapters line
(for most of the machines this will be Cirrus Logic 5436)
Click on the “Properties” Box
Click on the “Resources” Tab
There should not be a check mark in the “Use Automatic Settings” Box
In the "Conflicting Devices List" box it should say no conflicts.  If there is an entry in this box showing a conflict in the "000A0000-000AFFFF" range the machine will need to be adjusted.

    To adjust the computer:

Click on "Start"
Click on "Settings"
Click on "Control Panel"
(you may have to use the slider bar on the right to find the "System" Icon)
Double click on the "System Icon"
On the "System Properties" windows click on the “Device Manager” Tab

Click on the “Properties” Box
Click on the “Resources” Tab
Unclick the “Use Automatic Settings” Box
Click on the “Resources” Tab
Click on “Set Configuration Manually”
Uncheck the “Use Automatic Settings” Box
Click on the "Second Memory Range 000B0000-000BFFF"
DO NOT click on the "Change Settings" Box (if you do, it will tell you “the settings can not be changed” this is OK, the following will change them anyway)
Click on OK
The next screen will be “Creating a Forced Configuration”
Click on Yes
The “System Setting Change” Screen is next
Click on Yes

When the computer reboots you will not be able to read the screen.  (Many Colored lines instead of words)

At this point Ghost the machine.

If you get a message when you turn on the computer that says,
“Your display adapter is not properly set”.

Do the following:
It will ask you if you want to see the "Adapter Properties"
Click on Yes
(for most, but not all of the machines this will be the Cirrus Logic 5436)
On the Cirrus Logic 5436 screen
Click on the “Resources” Tab

Click on Yes
When the computer reboots you will not be able to read the screen.  (Many Colored lines instead of words)

At this point Ghost the machine.

Creating A Boot Disk for Ghosting the Machine

You will need a Bootable Floppy Disk to be able to start the computer for Ghosting.
To create a Bootable Floppy Disk:
Click on “Start”
Click on “Settings”
Click on “Control Panel”
Double Click on the “Add/Remove Programs” icon
Click on the “Startup Disk” Tab
Click on the “Create Disk” Box
Insert a floppy disk in the floppy drive when directed
When you have inserted the disk
Click OK
When the computer is finished
Click on cancel
You now have a Bootable Floppy Disk.

    Ghosting The Computer

Start the computer with the Bootable Floppy Disk in the A drive
It should already be on “Start Computer With CD-ROM Support”
(if not, arrow up or down to it)
(if you do not press Enter fast enough it will choose this entry anyway so there is no problem)
Press Enter  ( if it has not already done so)
At the A:\ prompt Type the drive letter of your CD-ROM (should be E: or F:)
Press the Enter Key
Type   Ghost   Then Press the Enter Key
When the Ghost Screen appears
Press Enter
From the Main Ghost Screen
Press the right arrow button for
"LOCAL"
then
"DISK"
Then Arrow down twice to "FROM IMAGE"
Press Enter
Next PRESS AND HOLD the "Shift" key (left or right makes no difference)
While holding the "Shift" key down press the "TAB" key
The cursor should be in the box right below “File name to load image from” (if not try it again or keep pressing the "TAB" key until it cycles back to the box below "File name to load image from")
Press the "Down Arrow" button to display the drive letters available
Press the "Down Arrow" to the CD-ROM drive letter
Press Enter
A list of files should be on the screen arrow down to the CBGHOST.GHO files
Press Enter
At the "Select Local Destination Drive"  arrow down to the "#1 Drive"
Press Enter
At the "Destination Drive Details" screen "TAB" to the OK box
Press Enter
At the "PROCEED with DISK LOAD" screen TAB to the Yes box
Press Enter

Follow the instructions on the screen
When Ghosting is though remove the floppy from the A Drive and re-start the computer

The computer will start loading drivers for the devices in the computer, this is normal.

It will ask for you to place the “Windows 98 Second Edition Install CD” in the CD-ROM.  The drivers are already in the machine.  You can arrow up or down to; or type in; C:\Win98 anytime the machine asks for the CD-ROM to be placed in the machine.

When you are finished this will fix the display problem.

This will also fix any machine that will not allow you to change the resolution to 800 by 600 pixels on the "Display Properties" "Settings" Tab.
To check this, place the cursor on any area of the screen that has no Icons visible.  Click with the RIGHT Mouse button This will bring up the "Display Properties" window
Click on the "Settings" Tab
The settings will be in the "Screen Area" box
You can place the cursor on the arrow and drag it to the right to 800 x 600 pixels.  (Do not change it to anything higher, most of the adapters will not allow a higher setting.)
Click on Apply
If there is problem with your choice, don't do anything and it will reset back to the way it was in 15 seconds.

If you are stuck on 640 by 480 pixels by re-doing the adapter settings and Ghosting this will fix the problem.  By changing this setting, the screen will have more stuff visible for the kids at one time. It will look like the screen is larger, the only problem is  the letters will be slightly smaller.

REMEMBER TO SAVE ANY WORK OR SOFTWARE THAT YOU HAVE ON THE MACHINE BEFORE YOU TRY THIS.  IT WILL RE-SET THE MACHINE TO A LIKE NEW CONDITION.

Have fun and good luck.  If there are problems let one of us know.
